Your questions answered

As an experienced actor headshot photographer, both before and during photoshoots I’ve been asked a wide range of questions about getting actor headshots, some of which I’ll answer below.

Selecting the perfect wardrobe for your actor headshots is crucial, as it can significantly impact how casting directors perceive your suitability for various roles. Your clothing choices should complement your features and align with the types of roles you want to pursue.

Here are some tips to help your decide on the options you bring:

Simple and Solid Colours

I recommend you bring a range of different tops with simple and solid colours that complement your skin tone and/or eye colour. Solid colours tend to photograph well and draw attention to your face.

Avoid Busy Patterns

Avoid clothing with busy patterns, or large logos, unless there’s a very specific look you’re going for, or if you are choosing a longer headshot session where we’ll be doing portraits as well. Patterns and logos can divert attention away from your face, which is the main focus of the headshot.

Wear What Reflects Your Casting Type

Select outfits that align with the types of roles you are interested in. If you often audition for professional roles, consider business-casual attire. For more casual or character roles, choose appropriate clothing.

Bring Variety

Consider bringing a few wardrobe options to the session to capture different looks. This can include variations in colour, neckline, and formality. Layers, such as a cardigan, blazer, or jacket can also add visual interest to your photos.

Be Comfortable and Confident

Wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Your body language and expression in the photos should reflect a sense of ease and authenticity.

Consider Your Headshot’s Purpose

Think about the roles you typically go for and choose clothing that fits those roles. For example, if you often audition for period dramas, classic and timeless clothing may be more appropriate.

Grooming

Ensure your clothing is clean, well-fitted, and in good condition. Try to avoid creases and if you have a sticky roller, bring it along to remove any fluff or pet hairs.

Remember that the main goal is to present yourself authentically and professionally.

Each actor headshot package includes a suggested number of tops to wear during your session. However, this number is not a limitation—feel free to bring as many clothing options as you’d like! We can work together to choose the tops that best complement your look and help create dynamic, professional actor headshots that stand out.

Whether or not to wear makeup for your actor headshots is a personal choice. I advise that if you do, apply a minimal amount and bring some along to add if necessary.

If you decide to wear makeup, aim for a natural and subtle look. The goal is to enhance your features without appearing overly made up.

Remember that actor headshots should show off the natural you, showing off your character range, rather than showing off your makeup artist skills.

I’d also recommend that if you regularly wear makeup, try to avoid using it for a few days to a week before your shoot. This will give your skin a nice rest.

Significant Change in Appearance

It’s essential to update your actor headshots any time you undergo a significant change in your appearance. Whether it’s a new hair colour, hairstyle, or any other noticeable difference, keeping your headshots up to date ensures casting directors see an accurate representation of you as they are often your first introduction to casting agents, so maintaining current photos is crucial.

Preparing for a Specific Casting

Another ideal time to refresh your headshots is when you’re preparing for a specific casting. If the casting requires a particular look or style, it’s important that your headshots reflect that. For those only in need of one new shot for a specific audition, my Top-Up package is a great, affordable option to quickly update your portfolio without committing to a full session.

General Recommendation: Update Every 2-3 Years

Even if your appearance hasn’t changed drastically, I recommend updating your actor headshots every 2-3 years. Regular updates keep your portfolio fresh and reflective of your evolving style and range as an actor, helping you stand out in a competitive industry.

By keeping your headshots current, you’re more likely to attract the attention of casting directors, ensuring you stay relevant and ready for any opportunity that comes your way.

Returning Customer Discount

As an added bonus, if you’re a returning customer, you can take advantage of a 20% discount on any of my actor headshot packages. This not only makes it easy to stay up to date but also ensures you receive professional, high-quality images at a competitive price.

Don’t stress, with years of experience editing actor headshots, I can confidently say that I can remove a spot. You don’t even need to worry about putting concealer on it. In fact I’d prefer it if you didn’t as this can limit the usable skin texture around the spot that I can clone to cover it up.

I’m in Herne Hill, which is near to Brixton, Camberwell, and Dulwich. There are great transport connections, and it’s possible to travel here in under an hour from most parts of London.

I’ve moved away from where I used to do my outdoor shoots, which is why they are no longer bookable via the website. However, the bridge I used to shoot under is only a 20-minute walk away from my new location, so I can still do shoots there.

This would be for the Standard package only, and since I would have to walk there, the shoot would be 40 minutes rather than an hour.

If you would like to book an outside session, please contact me.

I do. 🙂

My evening and weekend photoshoots include an additional surcharge to accommodate out-of-hours scheduling which is £50.

The Standard Package evening session is available to book via the website, for Monday or Thursday evenings.

If you would like to book another package for an evening session, or to enquire about a weekend photoshoot, please contact me.

During the winter months, evening shoots are exclusively held in-studio. However, as summer approaches, you’ll have the added flexibility of choosing between studio or outdoor settings, giving you more options to capture the perfect shot.

Although there are these surcharges , my packages still remain competitively priced. In fact, they offer greater value compared to many other London-based actor headshot photographers who provide similar packages. This ensures you receive high-quality images without compromising your budget.

Proof images a low resolution samples images from the shoot. These are provided within approximately 24 hours of your photoshoot for you to select the images you would like edited. No proof images may be used for any reason other than review to choose images for editing.

I select to be the best ones from the whole shoot, looking at areas such as lighting, focus, background, variety of facial expressions, etc.

Anywhere from 10% of the total shots taken during your photoshoot.

For each package there is an estimate for the number of images included in the online gallery. This number is not a guarantee. Actual number may be more or less.

Editing time is usually 7-10 business days from when you let me know your choices and I send them either as an email attachment or upload to dropbox.

Editing time is the same for all packages, as I edit each clients images in the order that they are received, along with doing multiple shoots per day.

Sometimes, with a strong wind behind me, I’ll complete the edits and get them back to you sooner.

If you would like your edits faster, 48h express editing is available to purchase as an add-on.

I don’t supply unedited/RAW images for a number of reasons, a couple of which are below.

Copyright and Intellectual Property: As the creator I retain all intellectual property rights of all images I capture, along with any edited images provided. This includes the sole Copyright. For more information on copyright, please see clause 4 of the Terms and Conditions.

All packages are priced based on the shoot length and the specified number of edits, which are provided with a licenced for personal, non-commercial use.

For more information on copyright and licencing, please see clause 4 and 5 of the Terms and Conditions.

Quality control: RAW files are the digital negative of a photograph. Images require post production to control the quality of my work that’s in the public domain.

As with above for quality control, I do not allow this. It is also against the terms of copyright.

My outdoor images are done under a bridge, so rain/cloud/too much sunshine are rarely a problem. The biggest issue can come from the wind, which is very good at messing up hair.  If the weather is too bad, the session will be carried out in-studio.

Please note, I have moved a short distance away from where I do my outside shoots, so these can only be booked upon request and are approximately twenty minutes shorter than an equivalent in-studio photoshoot, to accommodate my travel time.

Image Quality During Your Actor Headshot Photoshoot in London

Although this isn’t a frequently asked question, it’s worth addressing here.

In-Studio Sessions

During in-studio sessions, your images are displayed on a large screen throughout the shoot. This allows you to review the shots in real-time and provide feedback on any adjustments you’d like to make. You can be confident that the final images will be a similar quality to those displayed on my website.

Outdoor Sessions

For outdoor sessions, I intermittently show the images on the camera screen during the shoot. While this may not provide the same level of detail as the in-studio display, rest assured that the quality of the final images will meet the same high standards.

Image Expectations and Quality Assurance

If you have any concerns during the shoot, feel free to raise them on the spot, and I’ll do my best to accommodate your requests. However, please note that if you’re expecting images that deviate significantly from my typical style or previous work, it may not be possible to fulfill those expectations. My goal is to deliver high-quality, authentic headshots that align with the style showcased on my website.

No Right to Reject Images

It’s important to understand that there is no right to reject the images for any reason, and refunds are not provided. For further details on this policy, please refer to clause 6.3 of the Terms and Conditions.

Having been brought up with cats, I’m predominantly a cat person and also now have two cats. Whilst they don’t get involved with the shoot, it’s something to be aware of, if you have allergies.

As for dogs, I love other people’s dogs, but wouldn’t want one of my own.
